VIllage of Cortez

Cortez, on Sarasota Bay in Manatee County, is one of the last remaining fishing villages on Florida's southwest Gulf coast. Easily reached just west of Bradenton, the historic working waterfront of Cortez is near area beaches, fishing piers and shops.

You will know you have found the place when you enter the village and all the streets are dotted with quaint, white, wooden fishing huts and houses.

My favorite restaurant is located in Cortez. Make sure you check out Starfish and Company, next to the Bell fish house. The seafood is brought over off of the docks from Bell Fish Company and prepared in one of the kitchens. Try to remember to bring cash. It is the most charming waterfront restaurant, and the seafood is outstanding.

It's also the place to go for jet skiing, kayaking and parasailing.

Don’t miss Cortez's Florida Maritime Museum, housed in the restored historic 1912 schoolhouse, itself located on the park-like grounds of the Cortez Nature Preserve. Displayed for your delight, you will find the Banks Shell collection, ship models, historic boats and an enthralling butterfly garden.
